How to never forget a birthday on iPhone

Your iPhone can already remind you of every birthday — it just needs a few minutes of setup. Here's the complete guide: Contacts, Calendar alerts, and putting upcoming birthdays right on your home screen.

How birthdays work on iPhone

Your iPhone doesn't keep a separate birthday list. Instead, it reads the birthday field on each contact card and shows those dates in a special Birthdays calendar inside the Calendar app. Get those two pieces right, add an alert, and your phone will remind you every year.

Step 1: Add birthdays to your contacts

  1. Open the Contacts app (or the Contacts tab in Phone).
  2. Tap the person, then tap Edit.
  3. Scroll down and tap add birthday.
  4. Pick the date and tap Done.

Do this for the people who matter most first — family, partner, close friends — then fill in the rest when someone's birthday comes up in conversation or on social media.

💡

Tip: If you use iCloud Contacts, birthdays you add on your iPhone also appear on your iPad and Mac automatically.

Step 2: Turn on the Birthdays calendar

  1. Open the Calendar app.
  2. Tap Calendars at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Make sure Birthdays is ticked, then tap Done.

Birthdays now show up as all-day events on the right dates, every year.

Step 3: Get an alert before the big day

Showing up in your calendar isn't the same as being reminded. To get a notification:

  1. Open Settings and go to Calendar (on newer iOS versions it's under Apps → Calendar).
  2. Tap Default Alert Times.
  3. Tap Birthdays and choose when you want to be alerted — for example on the day, a day before or a week before.

A week before is great for buying a gift; on the day is perfect for sending a message. The built-in setting only lets you pick one alert time for all birthdays, though.

Where the built-in setup falls short

Contacts + Calendar is a solid start, but most people hit these limits sooner or later:

  • One alert for everyone. You can't get a week's notice for your mum and a same-day ping for a colleague.
  • No countdown. There's no easy "Ana's birthday is in 3 days" view.
  • No gift notes. Ideas you have in March are gone by the time October comes.
  • Anniversaries get lost. Wedding anniversaries and other dates don't appear in the Birthdays calendar.
  • Out of sight, out of mind. Unless you open Calendar, nothing reminds you a birthday is coming up.

Step 4: Put upcoming birthdays on your home screen

The best way to never be surprised is to see what's coming every time you unlock your phone. That's what home-screen widgets are for. To add one:

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of your home screen until the apps jiggle.
  2. Tap Edit in the top corner, then Add Widget.
  3. Search for the app whose widget you want and choose a size.
  4. Tap Add Widget, drag it where you like and tap Done.

The Calendar widget shows your next events, birthdays included, but only once they're close and mixed in with everything else. A dedicated birthday widget shows only birthdays, with a countdown, so the important ones never get buried under meetings.

Import birthdays from Contacts, set reminders per person, keep gift ideas, and see live countdowns on your home screen. Anniversaries too.

Habits of people who never forget

  • Two reminders, not one. One a week ahead for planning a gift, one on the day to send your wishes.
  • Write gift ideas down the moment you hear them. "I've always wanted to try pottery" is a gift — if you remember it.
  • Send your message in the morning. Early wishes feel thoughtful; late-night ones feel like an afterthought.
  • Keep your list in one place. Birthdays scattered across Facebook, a paper diary and your calendar are birthdays you'll miss.
  • Back it up. If your list lives in an app, export it now and then so you never have to rebuild it.
Remembering a birthday takes ten seconds of setup. Forgetting one can take a lot longer to make up for.

Frequently asked questions

Can my iPhone remind me of birthdays automatically?

Yes. Add the birthday to the person's contact card, make sure the Birthdays calendar is turned on in Calendar, then choose a default alert time for birthdays in Settings → Calendar → Default Alert Times.

Why are birthdays not showing in my iPhone Calendar?

Usually the Birthdays calendar is hidden, or the contact doesn't have a birthday saved. Open Calendar, tap Calendars and tick Birthdays, then check the contact card has its birthday filled in.

How do I see upcoming birthdays on my home screen?

Add a widget: touch and hold an empty area of the home screen, tap Edit → Add Widget, and pick a calendar widget or a dedicated birthday widget app such as B-day Widget.

Can I get different reminder times for different people?

Not with the built-in Calendar setting, which uses one alert time for all birthdays. A birthday app like B-day Widget lets you customise alerts.
